The shallow, somewhat sketchy, quality of the carving and the facial type seen here are entirely consistent with the work of Gerard van Opstal. Of Flemish origin, van Opstal moved to Paris in the 1640s and produced decorative carved marbles for the Louvre and the Palais des Tuileries. He also carved numerous ivory reliefs depicting mythological scenes of which seventeen are known to have belonged to Louis XIV.
