Well carved through layers of cinnabar-red lacquer to the matte black ground with Xiwangmu, Queen Mother of the West, with her phoenix and an attendant around the cylindrical pen cover, the handle of the pen depicting four of the eight Daoist immortals with their attributes in a rocky landscape, all against the black diaper ground, with lotus petals and key-fret bordering the ends of each cylinder (minor losses)
