A REGENCY BRASS-INLAID PADOUK WRITING-TABLE
POSSIBLY BY GILLOWS, CIRCA 1810
The gilt-tooled green leather-lined rounded rectangular top fitted with a rosewood-crossbanded writing-surface, above a plain frieze with simulated panels and a mahogany-lined drawer with star-shaped handles, enclosing a sliding ratcheted green-baize-lined slope, seven pen-trays and wells, on ring-turned reeded tapering legs, with brass caps and castors, with remains of a red-bordered paper sticker to the inside of the drawer, the inside of the back frieze with lead counter-balance, the metalwork original

Lot Essay

A sketch for this type of table appears in Gillows' Estimate Sketch Books, dated 1810, where it is described as a 'chamber writing-table' (No.344/144, p. 11, Westminster City Archives). Star-shaped or sunburst handles feature on furniture supplied by Gillows of Lancaster, such as the sofa table supplied for Shugborough, Staffordshire (J. Martin Robinson, Shugborough, 1989, p. 76). A related writing-table was sold anonymously, Christie's, London, 27 April 2006, lot 328 (£11,400), a related brass-inlaid writing-table was sold anonymously, Christie's, New York, 22 October 1988, lot 113 ($26,400), and a further related writing-table, was sold anonymously, Christie's, London, 26 January 2006, lot 136 (£9000).
