A ROMAN BRONZE HANDLE
CIRCA 1ST-2ND CENTURY A.D.
Likely from an askos, the curving fluted grip terminating in a bust of Dionysus below flaring palmettes, the god with a wreath in his wavy hair, a fillet across his forehead, a tendril falling onto each shoulder, the upper terminal a reclining nymph, perhaps Ariadne as she awakens from a dream of Dionysus on the island of Naxos, depicted nude but for a mantle rolled over her hips and draped around her legs, her feet bare, supporting herself on her extended left arm atop a large naturalistically-depicted grape leaf, her right hand resting on her head just above her chignon, two rivets preserved in the leaf for attachment to the vessel

According to myth, Theseus brought Ariadne to Naxos on his way back to Athens. Dionysus came to her in her sleep and commanded her to stay on Naxos so that he could marry her. For depictions of the reclining Ariadne see no. 53ff. in Bernhard, "Ariadne" in LIMC.
