Lot Essay

Sir Henry "Chips" Channon (1897-1958) was an American born British Conservative politician and author. Best remembered for his diaries that tell of his life as a politician and the colourful social world of London's high society, he once described himself thus:
"I have flair, intuition, great good taste but only second rate ambition...I hate and am uninterested in all the things most men like such as sport, business,...war and the weather; but I am rivetted by lust, furniture, glamour, society and jewels". (Chips, ed. James, 38.)
