IRAN, EARLY 17TH CENTURY
The flatter sided rounded body rising to a tapering tubular neck with thistle mouth, kick foot underneath, the body moulded on each side under the glaze with a figural scene, on one side a lion straining against its leash held by a tribesman, the other side with a winged bull above a kylin, covered with a rich plain green glaze, mouth replaced with a silver mount

An almost identical bottle is in the Victoria and Albert Museum, inv. 1339-1876 (Arthur Lane, Later Islamic Pottery, London, 1957, pl.96). Another example of the same designs, but under an orange-brown glaze, is in the Gemeente museum, The Hague (Arthur Upham Pope, A Survey of Persian Art, Oxford, 1938, pl.807B).

Both bottles show that the shape of the present silver mount mirrors almost exactly the original which may be wholly or partly preserved underneath.
