The six chairs can be attributed to the Ashton family of chair turners who worked over much of the 18th and 19th Centuries in the villages of Spilsby, Alford and Louth in Lincolnshire. Characterised by not being stained, the use of pale ash with its distinctive grain is a hallmark of their work. The two armchairs were made in the first quarter of the 20th Century by a skilled turner, providing well-observed chairs to match the side chairs.
