A SET OF FOUR GERMAN GILTWOOD SIDE CHAIRS
Early 19th Century, in the manner of Leo von Klenze
Each with rectangular padded back and bow-fronted seat covered in green and gold-coloured patterned silk, the curved tablet toprail decorated with a gilt composition central floral wreath flanked by scrolling foliage, above panelled uprights with trailing foliage and flanked by volute brackets, the palmette-embellished rail above panelled sabre legs headed by patterae and carved with scrolling foliage, minor differences in decoration (4)

Lot Essay

This set of chairs is closely related to the open armchair designed by Klenze around 1820-1830 for King Ludwig I of Bavaria, which is in the collections of the Counts of Schönborn, and illustrated in Exhibition catalogue, 'Schatzhäuser Deuthsclands - Kunst in Adligen Privatbesitz', Munich, 2004, fig. 109
