By repute these chairs are removed from the old Princenhof, now Hotel The Grand, at Oudezijds Voorburgwal in Amsterdam circa 30 years ago. In 1808 the Princenhof was placed by Royal Decree at the disposal of the Amsterdam City Council, while the former town hall became the Royal Palace on the Dam, used as residence by Lodewijk Napoleon. A virtual similar set was sold Christie's Amsterdam, 29 September 1999, lot 705. A comparable mahogany set was sold Christie's Amsterdam, 24 September 2002, lot 62. And a comparable elm set was sold Christie's Amsterdam, 22 March 2005, lot 156.
