Lot Essay

Jack Warner was one of the most legendary figures in Hollywood, who co-founded the Warner Brothers studio. His career spanned six decades, and he helped to launch the careers of stars such as Erroll Flynn, Humphrey Bogart and Lauren Bacall. Much of the collection from his Beverly Hills residence was sold by Christie's New York, 12 October 1990.
The trompe l'oeil statues of deities displayed in the triumphal-arched niches of a flower-festooned and marbled wall, portray Jupiter and Mercury with Flora, Apollo, Bacchus and Diana. The latter four are perhaps emblematic of the Seasons.
