Lot Essay

The present chairs are modelled after the famous set of twenty two George I burr-walnut and parcel-gilt dining chairs attributed to the Robert family and supplied to Sir Robert Walpole, later 1st Earl of Orford (1676-1745) for Houghton Hall, Norfolk. Two pairs of these chairs, originally placed in the Cabinett and Cov'd or Wrought Bedchamber at Houghton Hall, were sold from the collection of the Marquess of Cholmondeley, Christie's London, 8 December 1994, lots 126 and 127 (£287,500 and £106,000).

A set of twenty George I style burr-walnut and parcel-gilt dining chairs of the same model as the present lot and the Houghton chairs were sold from the collection of the late Sir Harold Wernher at Luton Hoo, Sotheby's London, 24 May 1995, lot 55 (£67,500).
