Lorenzo Booth's Original Design Book for Decorative Furniture, 1864 discussed related 'Gothic' chair patterns, with antiquarian 'folding stool' frames, as being 'perfectly' or 'medievally' English. These frames evolved from A.W.N. Pugin's, 1840s New Palace of Westminster pattern for Prince Albert's Chamber; while their combination with tablet-railed backs relates to designs by E.W. Pugin (d. 1875) popularised by C. & R. Light's, Cabinet Furniture, 1881.
