Blue interlaced L's enclosing date letter L for 1764, painter's mark for Méreaud, the cup incised 3 and oo, the saucer incised 3
Richly painted with frises riches of alternate blue and carmine shells linked by laurel branches and reserved on a carmine-seeded ground edged in gilt and carmine and suspending flower garlands, the finial as a yellow ranunculus
3¾ in. (9.6cm.) wide overall, the cup; 5in. (12.7cm.) diam., the saucer (3)

Lot Essay

The mark of Charles-Louis Mèreaud le jeune, recorded at Sèvres 1756-1780 as a painter of flowers and patterns, is often found on frises riches decoration incorporating shells, fronds, and a seeded ground.
