The Sèvres manufacturing record or feuille d'appréciation of 1826 for the present tray describes it as follows:
No 71: 1 plateau de Déjeuner ovale 1ere gr fond bleu lapis, Peinture de fruits sur feuilles décor en or
With 800 francs paid to Jacobber as the painter and with the gilding attributed to Vaubertrand, its cost of production was recorded at 1072 francs, its selling price at nearly half-again as much or 1500 francs. (Arch. MNS, Pb6).
The decoration matches that of a small service described in the records as Service Fruits peints sur une feuille, fond lapis, initially delivered to the duchesse de Berry in 1825, with supplements supplied each subsequent year until 1828.
In an analysis of his choices for the annual exhibition of pieces made by Sèvres the previous year, this one held in January 1827 at the palais du Louvre, Aléxandre Brongniart notes: "...des assiettes fruits sur feuilles du service du même nom qui à passé l'an dernier par M. Jacobber puis un tableau ovale de Déjeuner pour le service précédent riche amas de beaux fruits sur feuilles par M Jacobber". The tray is described under entry no. 15 of the exhibition catalogue as decorated with fruit on leaves and specifically made to accompany the service exhibited as no. 13 - that service being the one similarly decorated and delivered to the duchesse de Berry over the course of three years.
A small service painted with fruit by Jacobber that appeared not long ago in Paris on the art market (Paris, hôtel Drouot, Doutrebente, 25 November 2005, lot 161) is almost certainly the service delivered in stages to the duchesse de Berry, King Charles X's daughter-in-law. The present lot cannot but be the tray made for it.
Moïse Jacobber is recorded at Sèvres as a painter 1818-1848.
