A SEVRES (HARD PASTE) PUCE-STRIPED GROUND TEAPOT AND COVER
Circa 1780, blue crowned interlaced L's mark, painter's mark for Le Guay
Of cylindrical form with waisted neck and recessed flat cover with gilt acorn finial, painted in bright colours in the neo-classic style with foliate scrolls and urns, butterflies alighted on the top curve of some scrolls, reserved within gilt bands on the puce variegated-striped ground, the faceted spout with alternate stripes of puce husks, green laurel, puce beading and gilt motifs, the angles of the facets edged in gilt, the handle gilt with scrolls

Lot Essay

Etienne-Henri Le Guay, recorded 1748-1749 and 1751-1796 as a painter of friezes and as a gilder.

A similarly decorated coffee-can and saucer is in the collection of the Musée national de céramique, Sèvres.
