Lot Essay

The decoration on the present service is similar to that numbered 129 in a pattern book of washed drawings of plates executed by Denis Levé for the factory in 1784 and retained in its archives. The word Jardin, annotated beside the image, is one of the terms used at Sèvres to differentiate types of flowers, in this case rooted blossoms as opposed to loose bouquets, garlands and sprays.

Services described as service 'Jardin' were sold in 1786, 1788, 1790 and 1792. An identically decorated saucière 'Boizot' dated OO for 1791 and with the painter's mark for Niquet is in the collection of the Victoria and Albert Museum and may have originally been part of the present service. Cf. Svend Eriksen and Geoffrey de Bellaigue, Sèvres Porcelain, Vincennes and Sèvres 1740-1800, London, 1987, pp. 140, 353, no. 158.

The present service has the following painters and gilder's marks: Jacques-François-Louis de Laroche (1758-1802), Pierre-Joseph-André Vielliard (1783-1793), Vincent Taillandier (1753-1790), Henri-Martin Prévost (1757-1797), Jean-Baptiste Tandart (1754-1800), Denis Levé (1754-1793 and 1795-1805), Henry-François Vincent (1753-1800), Michel-Gabriel Commelin (1768-1802), Guillaume Noël (1755-1800), Nicquet (1764-1792), Charles-Théodore Buteux (1786-1793 and 1795-1821), Louis-François L'Écot (1761-1764 and 1772-1800), Nicholas Dutenda (1765-1788 and 1790-1802), Pierre Massy (1779-1802), Étienne-Henry Le Guay (1748-1749 and 1751-1796), Henry-Germain Boileau (1781-1793), Guillaume-Charles-Alexandre Buteux (1782-1794), Charles-Nicolas Buteux (1763-1801).
