Lot Essay

This tureen is possibly from the service acquired in several intervals by Henri-Léonard-Jean-Baptiste Bertin who held a number of important positions in the final decades of the Ancien régime including secrétaire d'Etat and contrôleur-général des Finances and administrateur et commissaire du Roi of the Sèvres factory. See D. Peters, Sèvres Plates and Services of the 18th Century, Little Berkhamsted, 2005, vol. II, pp. 349-351.

Pierre-Louis-Philippe Armand is recorded as a gilder and a painter of flowers, birds and patterns at the factory from 1758-1781.
