The Elizabeth Moore who wrought this sample was likely born on October 16, 1791 to Warham Moore and Annie Newberry of East Windsor, Connecticut.

This sampler relates closely in design to two other Norwich samplers, both illustrated in Betty Ring, Girlhood Embroidery (New York, 1993), vol. I, figs. 233-234. In her discussion of Connecticut needlework, Ring asserts that the most important Colonial samplers and needlework pictures of Connecticut were made by girls of New London County, probably in Norwich, which was the commercial center of eastern Connecticut in the mid-eighteenth century.
