Lot Essay
Jane Buchanan (1793-1839) grew up in the Lancaster, Pennsylvania area and married Elliot Tole Lane in 1813. Her brother was United States President James Buchanan (1857-1861). This needlework and another wrought by her, "Plunderer" were among the family treasures left to Mrs. James Eldridge by her mother who had been left them by a great-aunt, Harriet Lane Johnston, niece and ward of President James Buchanan. Jane Buchanan was Mrs. Eldridge's great-great grandmother.
Jane Buchanan may have had exposure to Samuel Folwell's school (1770-1824) in Philadelphia. This needlework exhibits several characteristics related to examples from this school including the thatched cottage, distinctly drawn face, flipper-like hands of the figure and hilly landscape. For further information on Samuel Folwell, see the following by Davida Tenenbaum Deutsch, "Samuel Folwell of Philadelphia: an artist for the needleworker," Antiques (February 1981), pp. 420-423; "The polite lady: portraits of American schoolgirls and their accomplishments, 1725-1830" Antiques (March 1989), pp. 742-753.
