Although Clemens Friedell (1872-1963) was born in Louisiana, he grew up in Vienna where he apprenticed to a silversmith and studied music. Returning to the United States in 1892, he first taught music and then in 1901 began working for Gorham. At Gorham, he became a chaser of Martelé and worked as a master chaser from 1903 to 1907. After leaving Gorham, he worked in Pasadena specializing in trophies and custom commissions. He is particularly well-known for his 107-piece holloware dinner service chased with orange blossoms in the Martelé style, commissioned by millionaire Eddie R. Maier. (See T. Wells, "Clemens Friedell: The Master of the Monogram," Silver Magazine, Nov.-Dec. 2003, p.p. 20-27)
