Liao dynasty, 10th century
The body subtly divided into six lobes, five of which are decorated with foliate medallions comprised of 'fish egg' appliqués below two bands of pendent leaf tips and a band of incised triple lines joining the short, upwardly bent spout and the ribbed strap handle, covered overall with white slip and a finely crackled amber glaze falling over the foot rim, and with a patch of amber glaze on the base; the later-added cover decorated en suite

A green-glazed ewer of the same shape and size as the current example in the collection of the Asian Art Museum of San Francisco, is illustrated by M. Medley in T'ang Pottery & Porcelain, London, 1981, p. 136, no. 134, has similar leaf-like appliqués, but more elaborate roundels on the sides of the vessel, and a bud-shaped finial on its cover.
