A similar circular seal with the character Cheng appears on a carved bamboo box and cover in the shape of a double gourd, illustrated by Ip Yee and Laurence C.S. Tam in Chinese Bamboo Carving, Part I, Hong Kong, 1978, pp. 438-9, where the box is dated to the 18th century.

The character Cheng is probably a reference to the famous bamboo carver Pu Zhongqian, who was also known as Pu Cheng. Pu was born in 1582 and was active during the early 17th century. According to Shixiang Wang and Wan-go Weng, Bamboo Carving of China, New York, 1983, p. 87, all extant works bearing Pu Cheng's name are disputable, and his work is only known through literary accounts.
