As the French carriage clock industry started to decline the Swiss industry came into its own and during the period 1900-1930 produced a large number of superb travel clocks, of which the present clock is a particularly fine example. Most were miniatures and embellished with fine enamels. The tradition of enamelling continued in Geneva until well into the 20th century. Indeed, a factory solely for the production of materials for enamels, run by Louis Millenet, was still in business at that time. With guilloché enamelling, designs are created on the surface of the silver clock case and translucent enamels are fired over it. The effect, especially when more than one design is incorporated as on this clock, is visually stunning.
