Depicting the wrathful deity and consort wearing black and green robes at the center wielding a spear with a banner and surrounded by a flaming aureole, with an entourage of lamas, wrathful deities and the Buddha Samantabhadra at the top, mounted on blue silk brocade, the reverse inscribed with mantras and Sankrit bijas

Lot Essay

A Tibetan inscription in gold letters at the base of this painting identifies the central figure as Mahakala, though they are likely depictions of 'hidden treasure' or terma deities in the Nyingma tradition. The Nyigma lineage figures identified at the top of painting include Padmasambhava, Pal Khakhyab dorje, Orgyan chozang, Orgyan Tenzin rabgye.
