This painting belongs to a standard set of eleven paintings designed by Situ Panchen, see D. Jackson, A History of Tibetan Painting, 1996, 259ff., fig. 137 and pl. 56; another example, from the Rubin Collection, is illustrated in M. Rhie and R. Thurman, Worlds of Transformation, Tibetan Art of Wisdom and Compassion, 1999, cat. no. 41. Ten of the paintings follow the present format depicting eight mahasiddhas and one deity in the sky.
