On narrow central foot, the turquoise interior painted in black with a bold palmette flanked by leafy sprays above stylised pomegranates, a band of rope-pattern around the cavetto, the rim with paired black spirals flanked by stylised leaves, the underside with a band of cusped panels containing spirals, repaired breaks
14¼in. (36.3cm.) diam.

The design on this dish relates closely to that of the preceding lot. Please see the note to that lot for further information. The cavetto found here is the same as on the blue and white dish already noted under that entry. The irregularity of the turquoise glaze, the shape of the foot and the design on the exterior all link this dish to one dated 873/1468-8 in the Oriental Art Museum, Rome (Lisa Golombek, Robert B. Mason and Gauvin A. Bailey, Tamerlane's Tableware, Costa Mesa and Ontario, 1996, pl.51 p.210, and col.pl.XI). They conclude that that dish most probably comes from Nishapur.
