A Two-Plate Standing Cuirass (Hotoke Nimai-Do Gusoku)
Edo period (18th-19th century)
The helmet bowl lacquered brown and finished to resemble a rough stone surface with a four-plate shikoro (neck guard) in Hineno style with small fukigaeshi (turnbacks) decorated with a family crest of diamond formation in red lacquer, the maedate (forecrest) a long-handled sake ladle lacquered red and black; the russet-iron Ressei face mask with a three-lame brown-lacquered yodarekake (throat guard); the suit lacquered brown with the do (cuirass) in two sections, hinged on the left side, with seven-section matching tassets, a bracket on the back of the cuirass for a flag; the tsutsu gote (sleeves) with six-lame chu-sode (shoulder guards); black-lacquered iyo haidate (thigh guards) and tsutsu suneate (shin guards); the entire suit laced in blue sugake odoshi (spaced-lacing) with cross knots at the sleeves; with wood storage box
