James Murray (1780-1847) was a fine chronometer maker, born in Moffat, Scotland. He became a Liveryman of the Clockmakers' Company in 1817 and went into business with Charles Strachan in 1816-1825. After Murray's death the firm was continued by his sons James and John. The business is recorded in London at 30 Cornhill (1840-1865) and 1 Royal Exchange (1872-1900); also at 11 Dalhousie Square, Calcutta from 1883.
