Lot Essay

A study for the picture of the same composition in the Boymans-van Beuningen Museum in Rotterdam, M. Roethlisberger, Abraham Bloemaert and his sons, Ghent, 1993, no. 390, fig. 551. Marcel Roethlisberger dated the picture between 1623 and 1629, probably more around 1624.
Two further drawings are connected to the composition, one for the figure of Christ formerly in the Van Regteren-Altena collection and another in the Louvre for the three central figures, Paris, F. Lugt, Inventaire général des dessins des écoles du nord, Paris, 1929, I, no. 89, pl. XIII. A studio repetition of the picture is in Utrecht, M. Roethlisberger, op. cit., fig. 550.
