Details
Abraham Ortelius (1527-1598)
Britannicarum Insularum Vetus Descriptio, [Antwerp:] 1590. Large handcoloured engraved map of the British Isles on 2 sheets, 4 elaborate cartouches, numerous galleons, German text on versos of both sheets (lightly browned, some spotting mainly at margins), each sheet 370 x 490mm. Shirley 160: "The fourth Additamentum published by Ortelius to supplement his atlas contained, in addition to new modern maps, a section devoted to classical history known as the 'Parergon'. Two sheets, bound consecutively, show the northern and southern parts of the British Isles with Romano-British tribes, Roman town names and other information according to classical traditions. Ortelius uses a new outline based on Saxton for England and Wales whilst Ireland and Scotland follow the existing maps in the 'Theatrum'." (2)
