The painting has been examined under infrared reflectography at the Rijksbureau voor Kunsthistorische Documentatie in The Hague. The sketchy underdrawing, already partly visible with the naked eye, shows the same characteristics as underdrawings in comaparable works by Van der Venne.

On stylistical grounds this work can be dated to the first half of the 1630s. The laughing face of the man at the left would appear to derive from Frans Hals' painting of Peeckelhaering (Staatliche Kunstsammlungen, Kassel).

This picture will be discussed in a forthcoming study on Adriaen van de Venne by Edwin Buijsen of the Rijksbureau voor Kunsthistorische Documentatie.
