Dated by Reiss, loc. cit., c. 1642, this is an early work painted in the style of Jan van Goyen. The composition derives from two drawings: a sketch in the D.G. van Beuningen Collection, Vierhouten (illustrated in Reiss, loc. cit..) shows the windmill and the edge of the pier in the immediate foreground, and a drawing in the Rijksprentenkabinet, Amsterdam (inv. 1967:90, illustrated in the Dordrecht exhibition catalogue, op. cit., no. 45) in which the jetty and the rowing boat are also similar.
A photograph of the painting taken before 1955 (Reiss, loc. cit.) shows a ferryman standing in the stern of the boat; this has since been removed by cleaning.
We are grateful to Dr. Alan Chong for providing us with additional information; he intends to publish the picture in his forthcoming monograph on the artist.
