The prototype, oil on panel, 31.2 x 48.3 cm, is in the Hermitage. It was bought by Alexander I in 1817 (C. Hofstede de Groot, A catalogue raisonné, etc., VII, 1918, p.426, no.273).
Dr. J. Wadum of the Mauritshuis has kindly pointed out that the panel maker's mark on the reverse is that of Guilliam Gabron. Since Gabron was active in Antwerp from 1614-1626, it must be assumed that the support was re-used in the 19th Century.
