Lot Essay

This painting relates to an incident in 1748 where Dr Samuel Johnson, the celebrated literary figure of the 18th Century, unsuccessfully sought financial patronage from the wealthy aristocrat Lord Chesterfield for the progression of his seminal 'Dictionary of the English Language' which he produced between 1747 and 1755.
