Lot Essay

The prototype, oil on panel, 429 x 311 cm, is in the Koninklijk Museum voor Schone Kunsten, Antwerp. It was painted for Nicholas Rockox for the High Altar of the Church of the Recolets, Antwerp, circa 1619/20 (E. Vandamme et. al., Catalogus Schilderkunst Oude Meesters, 1988, p.318, no.297, ill.).
