The prototype, signed and dated 1657, is in the City Art Gallery, Manchester (M.S. Robinson, The Paintings of the Willem van de Veldes, 1994, I, pp. 473/5, no. 234, ill.). The present lot can possibly be identified as the picture that was with P. de Boer, Amsterdam, in 1941 (M.S. Robinson, op.cit., p. 475, no. 234-2).
