Lot Essay

Goodwin first went to Venice with Ruskin. The mystery of the city never lost its appeal for him:

'When I first went to Italy as the favoured guest of Ruskin, it was my firm conviction I should never be able to afford to go again, and here I am taking once more the family not only to Switzerland but Italy!' (Diary, 21st April, 1909).
