A New Account of the East Indies. Edinburgh: John Mosman, 1727. 2 volumes 8° (201 x 122mm). 8 folding engraved maps, 11 plates, most by Robert Mylne. (One map slightly torn at margin, I:K6 with long marginal tear close to text, some mainly marginal soiling.) Contemporary blind-panelled Scottish calf with morocco gilt spine labels and volume numbers directly lettered (corners slightly bumped, short worm track to lower cover of vol. II). Provenance: William Mercer of Aldie (armorial bookplate).

FIRST EDITION, later reprinted in London, of this 'detailed picture of British involvement in the cosmopolitan world of Asian trade' (ODNB). As the title-page states, the author was in the east 'from the year 1688 to 1723, trading and travelling by sea and land to most of the countries and islands of commerce and navigation between the Cape of Good-hope and the island of Japan.' His description of a host of journeys on behalf of the East India Company is enriched by maps of the whole of the Orient. Cordier Indosinica, 890; Hill 765.
