Lot Essay

Mann was born in Glasgow and studied in Paris at the studio of Carolus Duran, enrolling in his atelier in 1877. His work owes much to the stark clarity of Bastien Lepage's plein-air realism which became a strong influence on the painter whilst in Paris. His rural landscapes have a lucid candour and acute sense of colour and the dramatic placing of the figures in the present work lends it an engaging charm.
