'CERES', A TERRACOTTA SCULPTURE BY ALEXANDRE CHARPENTIER, 1907
Signed and dated
Born in Paris in 1856, Alexandre Charpentier learned the art of engraving very young, firstly on jewellery and medals, before moving on to work with sculpture and reliefs. In 1879, he exhibited in the Salon des Artistes Français and one of his works, 'Le Tireur d'Arc', was bought by Alexandre Dumas. He later focussed on furniture and utility objects, opening several workshops and winning the Grand Prix in the Exposition Universelle of 1900 in Paris. He participated in numerous important decoration projects, most notably for the Villa Majorelle in Nancy. He died in Neuilly sur Seine, near Paris, in 1909.

Fils d'ouvrier né à Paris, Alexandre Charpentier entre très jeune comme apprenti chez un graveur de bijoux puis chez un graveur en médailles, auprès desquels il se familiarise avec la sculpture et le bas-relief. En 1879 il expose au Salon des Artistes Français et son bas-relief 'Le Tireur d'Arc' est acheté par Alexandre Dumas. Il s'adonne ensuite aux objets usuels et mobiliers, ouvre plusieurs ateliers d'ébénisterie et obtient le Grand Prix à l'Exposition Universelle de 1900. Il participe à de nombreux projets de décoration, notamment pour la Villa Majorelle à Nancy. Il s'éteint en 1909 à Neuilly sur Seine.
