Dr. Pierre Jacky has confirmed this painting to be an autograph work by Desportes, upon inspection of the original, noting that there might have been some studio assistance in the execution of the background areas. He dates this work to circa 1704 making it possible that this portrait could well be one of the paintings entitled, deux chasseurs en différentes attitudes, exhibited at the Paris Salon that same year. Another version of the present picture was sold Piasa, 25 June 2004, lot 45, as attributed to Desportes.
