Throughout his career Iacovleff maintained a fascination with theater and dance. In 1932 he released an illustrated volume on Kabuki based on earlier studies he produced in Japan during his first Far Eastern trip. The work on paper in the present lot is an example of a drawing after which the accompanying lithographs were modeled.

For further examples of The Kabuki Series, see Exhibition catalogue, Le Théatre Japonais (Kabuki), Paris, 1933, pp. 28, 36, 44, 49, 65, 69, 76, pls. IX, X, XI, XII, XIII, XIV, XV, XVI, XXI, XXII, XXIII, XXIV, XXV, XXVI and Exhibition catalogue, Alexandre Iacovleff, Paris, November 23-December 18, 1965, illustrated p. [15], no. 60.
