Vermout, cheval de course

Executed in 1865, the present portrait of the thoroughbred Vermout, who won Longchamp's Grand Prix of Paris in 1864, is perhaps the artist's best work. An example of the model is illustrated by Christopher Payne in Animals in Bronze, Antique Collectors Club, Woodbridge 1986, p. 300, fig. H69. Another example sold Christie's London, 29 September 2005, lot 28 (£7,200).
