His paintings of Paris, and especially Montmartre, would become emblematic of the years spent there by many of the world's greatest artists at the beginning of the 20th Century. Quizet was himself an integral part of this community of artists - spending his life from infancy to old age on the hill of Montmartre, frequenting the Lapin Agile, and painting in the streets below the Sacré Coeur. It was in this manner that Quizet met Maurice Utrillo, who approached him asking to be taught how to paint in watercolour. Utrillo went on to become Quizet's pupil, adopting the older artist's love of Parisian street scenes. Lots 35 to 38 in this sale include typical scenes of the French capital, along side compositions that demonstrate his interaction with the work of fellow artists Van Gogh and le Douanier Rousseau.
