The present humidor is an early, but fine example of von Lossberg's experimentation in enamelwork, the inspiration for which no doubt came from the collection of twelfth-century Limoges enamels recently donated to the Metropolitan Museum by J. P. Morgan Jr (see Hommage à
Limoges
: A Note on the Enamels of Caldwell & Co., New York, in Bolletino d'Arte, vol. 95, supplement (1997), pp. 173-180). Another humidor, identical but for differing enamel plaques, was sold Sotheby's New York, 10 May 2000, lot 140A.
