However, both were unacceptable accoutrements for the lady when she went out socially. For this reason, the lorgnette was introduced as an alternative to unsightly spectacles. Made with precious metals and often set with gemstones, lorgnettes were designed as framed lenses, hinged to fold into a handle, and used by bringing them close to the eye. They could be held in the hand or suspended around the neck like a pendant.
