Qianlong (1735-1796)
Comprising a tea-caddy and a cover, decorated to one side with a panel of a lady and child, the other side with a panel of figures in a landscape, cover matched, 12.5 cm. high; two cups and saucers painted with scenes from the country life; a lobed dish painted with the murder of Sir George Brander by his nephew, hairline rim cracks, chip, 20.5 cm. wide; and three coffee-cups variously painted and gilt with figures in a landcape, minor frits and chips, gilt rubbing (9)

A bowl with a similar pattern to the lobed dish is also illustrated by Hervouët and Bruneau, where they tell the story of Sir George, whose retirement from the British East India Company after a brilliant career was sadly cut short by his nephew and heir, Thomas, who, deep in gambling debt, was refused by his uncle with a distrastrous result.
