Lot Essay

Depicted on one side a bearded trainer wearing a himation draped over his left shoulder, holding a stick in his right hand and correcting the position of the nude athlete in front of him with his raised left hand. Behind him an athlete is shown holding halteres for the long jump and on the other side another athlete looks back with a pseudo-inscription in the field.
The other side depicts four bearded male boxers, tying straps around their hands for a fight. Until the end of the 5th Century B.C., these straps consisted of strips of narrow long leather, primarily serving to protect the wrist of the hand and the finger bones of the boxers. Beneath the handle to one side is a crouching athlete and beneath the other handle is a Heron, rendered in added white slip.
