AN ATTIC BLACK-FIGURED TYRRHENIAN NECK-AMPHORA
ATTRIBUTED TO THE CASTELLANI PAINTER, CIRCA 560-550 B.C.
The body decorated in three registers, the upper register of one side centered by two hoplites in combat, each wearing a short chiton, armed with a corselet, greaves, a crested Corinthian helmet and a circular shield, wielding a spear, a fully-armed horseman on either side, a mantled female onlooker at the far right, two at the far left; the middle register with confronting sirens with their heads turned back, framed by panthers; the lower register with confronting goats, their heads lowered, a panther to the right, a ram to the left; the upper register of the other side with five gesticulating komasts, all nude but for one in a short red shirt, a woman to the far right; the middle register with confronting panthers, their heads turned out, framed by goats; the lower register with a ram between panthers walking away; with alternating red and black tongues on the shoulders, a lotus and palmette cross on the neck, rays above the foot, details in added red and white
