Lot Essay

Each side features a single figure isolated against the black ground in the manner perfected by the Berlin Painter and his followers. On the obverse is a fully armed warrior walking to the right, accompanied by his dog. He holds a shield with an apron over his left shoulder, a spear in his right hand, and wears a crested helmet, a corselet, a short chiton with zigzag, a chlamys and greaves. On the reverse stands a chiton-clad youth leaning on a staff. A meander band encircles below the scenes, and there is a palmette and scrolling tendrils below each handle. For another version of the scenes see the example in the Kunsthistorisches Museum, Vienna, no. 69 in J.M. Padgett, ed., The Berlin Painter and His World, Athenian Vase-Painting in the Early Fifth Century B.C.
